Softball Sweeps Home Opener against Drew, 10-2 and 10-2

Pioneers push winning streak to six

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (11-3) ran its winning streak to six games with a 10-2, 10-2 doubleheader sweep of Drew (6-12) during the 2019 home opener at Pioneer Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) and freshman first baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) both recorded RBI-singles during its first at-bat for a 2-0 edge.
  • After the Rangers tied the game in the top of the fifth, WP answered with eight in the bottom of the same frame to seal the victory. Reed's triple to right field scored two, while freshman designated player Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) added a two-RBI double to make it 6-2. A run-scoring triple from freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), an RBI-single from senior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) and a two-RBI double from freshman Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) closed out the scoring.
Game Two
  • After a pair of singles and a Drew fielding error gave WP  a 1-0 lead, senior third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) launched a three-run home run to straight-away-center that pushed the advantage to 4-0 after two innings.
  • Junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made it 6-0 margin in the third with an RBI-double down the right field line that plated two.
  • Drew got two runs back in the top of the fourth, but a run-scoring single from freshman second baseman Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) capped off a four-run fifth for William Paterson.
