WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson softball (13-3) got seven runs during the second inning of game one, and scored 10 over the first three innings of game two to highlight a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's – Long Island, 9-0 and 12-5, March 28 at Pioneer Softball Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
- WP crossed the plate seven times in the home half of the second, beginning with freshman designated player Caitlin Monahan's (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) run-scoring infield single. A perfectly-executed double steal allowed freshman first baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) to score from third, while freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) produced a run-scoring bunt single. After a bases loaded walk plated the fourth Pioneer run, sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) lined a single to second, scoring two. A wild pitch allowed the seventh run of the inning to cross.
- Junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) concluded the scoring in the third after her single plated two.
Game Two
- St Joseph's went up 1-0 in the top of the first, but WP answered with a pair of runs in its first at-bat as freshman left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) tripled home Archibold and senior third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) singled in a run.
- Following a RBI-groundout from junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) in the second, Griffith lined a shot to deep right center for a three-run inside-the-park home run as the Pioneers pushed their advantage to 6-1.
- The Golden Eagles got three runs back in the top of the third to make it a 6-4 affair. In the home half of the same inning, Archibold laid down a beautiful two-out bunt single up the third base line that plated freshman Crystal Arendas (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional). Naveo's triple to left center scored three as William Paterson moved ahead, 10-4.
- An error, hit by pitch, fielder's choice and infield single produced a St. Joseph's run to make it 10-5. Junior pitcher Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) rounded out the scoring with a two-RBI double in home half of the sixth
