Late Rally Not Enough for Baseball at Drew, 7-6

Pioneers Strand Tying Run on Third Base in the Top of the Ninth

MADISON, N.J. – William Paterson (9-3) crossed the plate four times during the final three innings, but the Pioneers' rally came up just short during a 7-6 baseball decision at Drew (5-6) March 19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP touched home first when sophomore catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) singled in sophomore center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) during the top of the first inning.
  • The Rangers leveled the score thanks to an error in the second, then jumped ahead by a 3-1 count in the third with a pair of unearned runs.
  • A two-out single pushed it to a 4-1 Drew advantage during the home half of the fourth inning.
  • Junior second baseman Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) doubled in classmate Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne), making it a 4-2 game in the fifth, but the Rangers plated three runs in the fifth.
  • Yelin doubled to right center in the top of the seventh, driving home Ferrara and DiGirolamo for a 7-4 score in the seventh, and DiGirolamo's RBI-single up the middle plated sophomore first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) to cut the lead to 7-5 during the top of the eighth.
  • A one-out error put sophomore right fielder Danny Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) aboard in the ninth, followed by a Weis double down the right-field line and a Dan Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) sac fly to center, creating a 7-6 margin. Perez walked to put runners on the corners with two outs, but a line drive to left field ended WP's comeback hopes.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • DiGirolamo finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, two walks and a pair of runs scored.
  • Weis was 3-for-5 while collecting a double and run scored, and Yelin went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
  • Junior starter Jack DeFouw (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took the loss (0-1) after surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks, striking out four in 4.0 innings of action.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson returns home to face Manhattanville Wednesday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m.
