Softball Closes out Final Day of Spring Games with a Sweep of Thomas More, Gettysburg

Pioneers record a pair of one-run victories as winning streak reaches four

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – William Paterson softball (9-3) finished off its Spring Break trip by registering a pair of one-run victories against Thomas More and Gettysburg on March 16 at The Spring Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS THOMAS MORE:
  • Freshman designated player Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) opened the scoring in the home half of the second when her single to left plated pinch runner Crystal Arendas (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional), while a run-scoring error and an RBI-single from senior third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) gave WP a 3-0 edge.
  • In the fourth, Monahan singled around junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) to make it a 4-0 lead.
  • Four hits, a wild pitch and a fielding error allowed Thomas More to make it a 4-3 game in the top of the sixth.
  • After Thomas More loaded bases in the top of the seventh, junior righty Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) got the Saints to fly into a game-ending double play to preserve the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS GETTYSBURG:
  • WP went up 1-0 in its first at-bat when sophomore designated player Caitlyn Massaro's (Madison, N.J./Madison) groundout plated freshman left fielder Janaya Espino (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech).
  • After the Bullets tied things up in the bottom of the first, the Pioneers regained the lead when Griffith doubled in junior Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills).
  • Gettysburg used four hits, three singles and a double, to cross the plate three times in the home half of the fourth to move ahead, 4-2.
  • William Paterson got a run back in the top of the fifth after a walk, single and a Gettysburg error.
  • In the sixth, freshman first baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) lifted a sac fly to center that scored classmate Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), and WP scored the eventual game-winner in the same frame when Archibold singled home Griffith.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI against Thomas More, and Griffith finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored vs Gettysburg.
  • In the circle, Massaro pushed her record to 5-1, while Grubiak evened her mark at 2-2 and picked up her third save of the season.
  • This was William Paterson's first ever meeting against either Thomas More or Gettysburg.
