Softball Bests Beloit, Drops New England in International Tiebreaker

Pioneers sweep day five of The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – William Paterson softball (7-3) used a 14-run first inning to secure an 18-10 win against Beloit in five innings, and later downed the University of New England 2-0 by way of international tiebreaker at The Spring Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS BELOIT:
  • WP put the game out of reach in the home half of the first, registering 14 runs on 11 hits. After getting on the board via pair of walks, a stolen base and a wild pitch, junior pitcher Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) laced a double down the left field line to plate sophomore designated player Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) and senior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook). Sophomore shortstop Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), freshman first baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) and freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) followed with three-straight RBI-doubles, while run-scoring singles from Archibold, Massaro and freshman Crystal Arendas (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) pushed the lead to 11-0. With the bases-loaded, senior Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) singled up the middle to drive in two, and classmate Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) capped off the inning with an RBI-single that scored freshman Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler).
  • Beloit responded with three runs in the top of the second, but Monahan's single to left center in the same frame scored Grubiak and junior second baseman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) to extend WP's advantage to 16-3.
  • The Pioneers would add another run in the home half of the fourth as Lupica's ground-rule double plated Massaro, while Griffith stole third and scored on a wild pitch to conclude the scoring in the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS NEW ENGLAND:
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) (2-0) dominated the Nor'Easters all afternoon, tossing a complete game eight-inning shutout for her second win of the season.
  • Despite Lupica's gem, the Pioneers struggled to cross the plate, stranding six runners through the first seven innings.
  • William Paterson finally broke through in the eight. With junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) placed at second, Griffith advanced the runner to third courtesy of a sac bunt. After Archibold singled and stole second, Massaro's bases-clearing single pushed WP in front, 2-0.
  • New England threatened in the bottom of the frame, but a game-ending 1-3-2 double play ended any hope of a comeback.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • William Paterson's 18 runs vs Beloit was the highest single-game output since the Pioneers plated 18 against Centenary last season (3/14/18).
  • At the plate, Lupica finished the day 4-for-7 with an RBI.
  • Massaro drove in four, scored three times and produced five hits over the two contests.

UP NEXT:
  • WP finishes up play at The Spring Games on Saturday, Mar. 16, against Thomas More at 9:45 a.m. and Gettysburg at 2:30 p.m.
