Pioneers Hand The Lions Their First NJAC Loss of the Season

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Sophomore guard Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) tied her season-high with 11 points and Alisa Giordano (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) led all scorers with 16 tallies as the William Paterson women's basketball team (8-7, 4-4 NJAC) handed The College of New Jersey its first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss of the season, a 56-46 decision Jan. 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Despite shooting struggles throughout most of the first half, WP was able to erase a six-point TCNJ lead as Chloe Kasbarian's (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) three-pointer from just outside the arc tied the score at 20-20 with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter. Back-to-back jumpers by Brooks and CeCe Green (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) gave the Pioneers a 24-23 edge as the teams headed to the locker room.
  • Leading 35-31 at the start of the final period, WP used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits, 46-31, with 7:22 left in the contest. The Lions would trim their deficit to nine (48-39), but Giordano would hit three straight from the charity stripe as the home team came away with the 56-46 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Brooks also led the Pioneers with nine boards and three assists.
  • Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) posted her 11th double-digit scoring output of the season by adding 10 points to along with four steals.
  • The Pioneers took care of the basketball all evening, committing just 11 turnover while forcing the Lions into 23 miscues which led to 16 points.
