Men's Basketball Uses Dominant Second Half to Pull Away From Rutgers-Camden, 80-55

Pioneers outscore Scarlet Raptors 42-19 over the final 20 minutes

WAYNE, N.J. – Leading 38-36 at the break, the William Paterson men's basketball team (11-7, 6-5 NJAC) outscored Rutgers-Camden (2-16, 2-9 NJAC) 42-19 in the second half to snap its three-game skid by posting a dominant 80-55 home victory Jan. 19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After Rutgers-Camden jumped out a commanding 14-point lead, 31-17, with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half, junior Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) knocked down four three-pointers and Sajimir Asani (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) added two trifectas as WP closed the opening frame on a 21-2 run and led by two (38-36) at intermission.
  • The Pioneers continued to find their offensive rhythm when play resumed, hitting on 18-of-28 (.643) attempts from the field while limiting the Scarlet Raptors to just four second half field goals. Anthony Uribe (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Nasir Fields (Winslow Twp., N.J./Winslow Twp.) each posted nine second half points as WP cruised to the 80-55 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Smith connected on 6-of-12 from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 20 point. Saint Simeon Beaubrun (Irvington, N.J./Columbia) continued his exceptional play, pulling down 12 rebounds and adding 12 points to post his third straight double-double.
  • Uribe and Fields each finished with a season-high 11 tallies, while Asani and Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) shared top honors with five assists apiece.
  • William Paterson used it size advantage in the low post all afternoon, outrebounding Rutgers-Camden by a 48-25 margin and outscoring the visitors in the paint 40-8.
