Baseball Jumps Ahead Early, Cruises to 10-3 Victory at Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Five different Pioneers had multi-hit efforts as the William Paterson baseball team (22-11) built an early lead and cruised to a 10-3 victory at Farmingdale State (20-12) April 24.

Freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled to right field with one out during the top of the first, advanced to second on a groundout, and covered the final 180 feet thanks to a pair of wild pitches for a 1-0 edge.

WP added five more in the second. Freshman right fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) hit a one-out triple to right-center field and graduate student first baseman Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) sent him home with a base hit up the middle. Freshman left fielder Francis Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drew a two-out walk, DiGirolamo's triple to right center scored two, and sophomore designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) had an RBI-single up the middle. Sophomore Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) walked and sophomore second baseman Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) added a base hit to center to load the bases, and freshman shortstop Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) was hit by a pitch to force across Dorio and make it a 6-0 margin.

The Rams used a base hit, steal, walk and double to cross the plate once during the home half of the second.

Hoagland opened the third with a triple and Deane sent a sacrifice fly to left for a 7-1 lead. The Pioneers added two more in the fourth, putting together a Perez solo homer over the fence in left center, a Ferrara double to the right-center gap, a groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch.

Farmingdale State got two runs back during the fifth inning on a single, two-base error, RBI-groundout, ground-rule double and run-scoring base hit.

William Paterson finished the scoring during the top of the sixth when Carter homered to left.

DiGirolamo finished 4-for-6 with a triple, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Carter went 3-for-5 with a triple, solo home run and two runs.
