Slow Start Dooms Women’s Basketball in 70-63 Setback at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (3-5, 1-3 NJAC) could not overcome a slow start to game, falling on the road to Rutgers-Newark (5-3, 3-1 NJAC) 70-63 Dec. 5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • From the opening tip it was all Rutgers-Newark as the home team scored 19 straight points to lead 23-11 after 10 minutes. Down by 20 (36-16, 5:38) WP closed out the half on a 14-1 run to cut the Scarlet Raider lead to seven (37-30) at the break. RUN would regain momentum and push its lead to many as 19 points and led 57-40 after three quarters.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Kye Adams (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and Alisa Giordano (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) capped off a 12-0 Pioneer burst that cut the deficit to five (57-52) with 6:00 remaining, but the rally would stop there as Rutgers-Newark made enough shots down the stretch to come away with the 70-63 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Pioneers put three players in double-figures with Giordano's 19 points leading the way, while Vianca Soriano (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and Adams each chipped-in 11 tallies apiece.
  • Defensively, CeCe Green (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) pulled down 10 boards and Carolyn Hill (Martinsburg, W.Va./Spring Mills) added nine.
  • William Paterson held a 58-34 rebounding advantage, including 26-8 on the offensive glass.

UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers return to the Sports & Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Stockton in NJAC play at 1:00 p.m.
