Men's Basketball Can't Get Past WPI, 65-57

WORCESTER, Mass. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (2-2) threatened late but couldn't get past host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (3-0), 65-57, in the championship game of the Ted Coughlin Memorial Tournament Nov. 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After Nasir Fields (Winslow Twp., N.J./Winslow Twp.) completed a three-point play to give WP a one point lead (13-12, 12:04), the Pioneers connected on just one field goal in a 5:19 span as the Goats stretched the lead to eight (23-15, 6:45).  WPI would push its advantage to 10 (33-23, 2:36) before an Anthony Uribe (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic) three-pointer and a pair of Henry Voorhees (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) free throws helped make it an eight-point affair at the break, 36-28.
  • Trailing by five midway through the second half, a Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) trey and a driving layup by Myles McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) tied the score at 45-45 with 7:48 remaining. WPI would respond with a 10-1 burst to put the game out of reach, sealing the 65-57 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McLeod led the Pioneers with 13 points and eight rebounds.
  • WP struggled from deep all game, hitting just 6-of-18 (.333) attempts from beyond the arc.
