Tennis Ends Season on High Note with 5-4 Victory Against Rutgers-Newark

Smallwood is Senior Day Deciding Point with Win at Sixth Singles

WAYNE, N.J. – Briya Smallwood (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) was the deciding point with her sixth-singles tiebreaker win, giving the William Paterson tennis team (1-9, 1-5 NJAC) a 5-4 victory Oct. 19 during the season finale against Rutgers-Newark (1-10, 0-5 NJAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • One of two Senior Day honorees, Smallwood opened her singles match with a 6-0 win, and after a 5-7 loss in the second set, she battled to a 7-6 (7-4) victory to take the night's final match.
  • Freshman Ashley Sawyer (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) earned a 6-2, 6-2 decision at third singles, and classmate Samantha Cruz (Andover, N.J./Central ) was victorious at fourth singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
  • Sawyer and Cruz teamed up for an 8-5 triumph at second doubles, and Smallwood and freshman Delia Rodriguez (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Technical Institute ) were 8-6 winners at third doubles.
  • In addition to Smallwood, WP honored senior Jessica Papin-Yukhtanova (Newton, N.J./Newton).
