Women’s Basketball Has Historic Night in 96-14 Rout of New Jersey City

Pioneers Allow Second-Fewest Points in School History

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Allowing the second-fewest points in program history, the William Paterson women's basketball team (11-8, 8-4 NJAC) dismantled visiting New Jersey City (0-15, 0-12 NJAC) during a 96-14 rout Jan. 24.

The 14 points scored by the Gothic Knights trailed only the 68-8 victory posted by WP against Brooklyn during the 1980-81 season, and bested the output of Ramapo during an 87-20 decision Feb. 5, 1997, in Wayne. The 82-point margin of victory also matched the best mark in the school annals (105-23, vs. NJCU, 1/29/91).

Numerous Pioneers registered career highs, including freshman guards Danica DeFrank (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) in points (13) and Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) in rebounds (nine), assists (three) and steals (four), and freshman forward Ema Jacketti (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) in rebounds (seven). DeFrank chipped in three assists and three steals, junior forward Sierra Strong (Howell, N.J./Freehold Boro) matched her career best with 11 tallies, and Brooks scored 10. Junior guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) collected 12 points, four assists and five steals, while classmate Ashley Castillo (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) notched 10 tallies and four assists.

William Paterson reeled off the first 26 points of the evening, not allowing the Gothic Knights to get onto the scoreboard until 1:17 remained in the first quarter, and the Pioneers carried a 53-2 lead into the locker room.

For the game, WP shot 57.5 (42-73) percent from the field while limiting NJCU to a 5-for-43 (.116) effort overall and 1-for-20 (.005) production from three-point range. The Gothic Knights' 27 turnovers were turned into 45 points, and the Pioneers enjoyed a 64-0 advantage in points scored in the paint.

William Paterson will face visiting Stockton Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1:00 p.m.
