Kristen Bowe’s Hat Trick, Adelman’s Two Scores Bolsters Women’s Soccer in 6-1 Win at New Jersey City

Sophomore Duo Combines for 12 Points as WP Evens up Conference Record

JERSEY CITY, N.J.  – The epitome of a dynamic duo was on display for the William Paterson women's soccer team at New Jersey City Saturday, Sept.30. The pair of sophomores, midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and foward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), combined to generate 12 points on five goals and two assists as the Pioneers soared to a 6-1 win vs. the Gothic Knights (2-8, 0-4 NJAC), making it six straight years in which WP (6-4, 2-2 NJAC) has come out with at least a draw against New Jersey City.

Despite the Pioneers' offensive onslaught, New Jersey City drew first blood in the 12th minute when sophomore midfielder Mallensy Vargas navigated around senior goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) and scored for the early 1-0 Gothic Knights advantage.

Sophomore forward Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) ignited the WP offense just minutes later, scoring her first of three goals after possessing a turnover in the box and finding the right side of the back of the net in the 17th minute.

Adelman followed suit in the 22nd minute, tucking a shot above New Jersey City junior goalkeeper Dominique Jackson and below the crossbar to give WP the lead for good. The 2016 co-New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year added to the Pioneer lead and her conference-leading goal total by weaving through the NJCU backline and scoring into the left side of the net in the 28th minute, making it 3-1 WP.

The sophomore duo worked in tandem for WP's fourth goal, as Adelman found Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) open in the box before she pocketed her second goal into the right side of the back of the net at the 42:28 mark.

A yellow card and foul in the box awarded a penalty kick opportunity that sophomore midfielder Lorraine Moffitt (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) capitalized on, giving WP the comfortable 5-1 upper hand just minutes before the break.

Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) showcased her range as she capped off her second-career hat trick in the 54th minute. Freshman forward Danielle Dachowski (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) passed the ball out from the top of the box to Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) who delivered a booming shot from 30 yards out that found space in the upper-right corner of the frame.

Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls)'s first-career hat trick came in her WP-debut, scoring a trio of goals as the Pioneers downed Medgar Evers, 9-0, Sept. 2, 2016. Adelman nearly had a hat trick of her own, narrowly missing twice after clanging a shot off the crossbar in the 14th minute and barely missing wide right in the 49th minute.

WP outshot NJCU 22-15 and Sandelli made seven saves for her sixth win of the season. Jackson made nine stops for the Gothic Knights.

With the win, WP adds to its dominating 19-2-1 career record vs. New Jersey City.

WP steps out of NJAC play for its first of two consecutive non-conference matches when it heads to John Jay (at Randall's Island) for a 4 p.m. kickoff Monday, Oct. 2.
