Union Defeats Pioneers During Final Penalty Corner

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The Dutchwomen were awarded a penalty corner during regulation's final seconds and they took advantage as Union (3-3) defeated host William Paterson (2-7), 3-2, in field hockey action Sept. 27 at Wightman Stadium.

The clock hit 0:00 before freshman midfielder Laura Wind sent the insert to sophomore midfielder/forward Charlotte Leyland on the right wing. Leyland dribbled in and hit a through ball toward the left post that sophomore midfielder/back Jenna Smith was able to poke in on the goal line for the game winner.

The Pioneers twice owned a one-goal lead, the first one coming 100 seconds into the contest when senior forward Carly Satter (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) launched a hard blast from just inside the circle to the right post.

Leyland answered with 2:02 remaining in the first half, taking a Sarah Wilkinson penalty-corner insert, dribbling up the middle of the field and converting to the left side of the cage.

WP again struck almost immediately after the opening whistle, this time finding the back of the cage 31 seconds into the second half when sophomore midfielder Shannon Super (Oaklyn, N.J./Collingswood) played a ball from wide on the right side and senior forward Andrea Mauro (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) got her stick on it to redirect it to inches beneath the crossbar.

Wilkinson leveled the score for the Dutchwomen in the 55th minute when she streaked hard up the left seam and connected with a Bretta Beer cross.

WP junior Mallory Rickerhauser (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) posted five saves for the Pioneers. Freshman Mary Beth Rudolf stopped three shots during the first 46:55, and classmate Heather Poisson collected one save and the victory.

William Paterson will finish its three-game homestand Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1:00 p.m. against No. 4 The College of New Jersey.
