SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (0-1) fell 3-0 in its season-opener Sept. 1 at Swarthmore (1-0).
The Pioneers were stride for stride with the Garnet, locked in a 0-0 stalemate until the 33rd minute when senior forward Hannah Lichtenstein took a pass from junior forward Marin McCoy and scored inside the far post, putting Swarthmore up 1-0.
McCoy was on the other end of Swarthmore's next goal, scoring off a one-timer on sophomore midfielder Sydney Covitz's cross from the right wing, extending Swarthmore's advantage to 2-0 in the 44th minute.
Swarthmore completed its scoring in the 72nd minute after senior forward Katie Dougherty corralled a loose ball in the box before finishing into an open net, making it 3-0 Garnet. Freshman forward Lizzie King was credited with the assist.
The Pioneers generated a number of scoring opportunities, putting 13 shots on goal, eight of which came in the second half. Sophomore forward
Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) threatened goal four times to lead WP. Senior goalkeeper
Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) made eight stops across 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers.
WP will travel to face Widener Sunday, Sept. 3, with the opening whistle set for 11 a.m.
