Softball Heads to Rochester, N.Y., for NCAA Tournament Regional May 12-14

Pioneers Take On Manhattanville Friday at St. John Fisher

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Second-seeded William Paterson (28-11, 15-3 NJAC) will face third-seeded Manhattanville (30-13, 14-0 MAC Freedom) in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament Friday, May 12, at 1:00 p.m. in the Rochester (N.Y.) Regional. In Friday's other first-round game, host and top-seeded St. John Fisher (36-6, 12-2 Empire 8) will take on fourth-seeded Penn State Behrend (26-12, 16-2 AMCC) at 3:30 p.m. Live statistics will be available for each contest.

Single-session tickets are $6.00 for adults, and $5.00 for senior citizens, veterans and children more than 12 years old. Children less than 12 years old are $3.00, and children less than two years old are admitted for free.
 
The four-team, double-elimination regional will be conducted Friday-Sunday, May 12-14, with the winner advancing to an NCAA Tournament Super Regional Friday-Saturday, May 19-20, at a site to be determined. The NCAA Softball Championship Finals will be held Thursday-Tuesday, May 25-30, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
  
The winner of the WP/Manhattanville game will face the SJFC/Penn State Behrend winner Saturday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m. The losers of the two Friday first-round games will face each other Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that contest will take on the loser of the 11:00 a.m. game at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams remaining after Saturday's play will meet at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. If both of those teams have one loss after that game, a final contest will be played Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to determine the regional champion.

WP is making its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017), reaching the NCAA Softball Championship Finals (College World Series) in 2001 and 2005.

The Pioneers are coming off a third-round finish in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament. Second-seeded WP defeated fifth-seeded Stockton (21-19-1, 9-8-1 NJAC), 6-3, in the first round May 2 in Wayne, and lost 2-0 to third-seeded and eventual champion Kean (31-17, 12-6 NJAC), and 1-0 to eventual runner-up Stockton (23-19-1), May 6 in Union.
 
A member of the All-NJAC First Team, sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) paces William Paterson with a .443 batting average (fourth in league), five home runs (tied-fifth in conference), 32 RBI (sixth in NJAC) and a .471 on-base percentage (seventh in league), and leads the conference with seven triples (sixth in Division III) and a .924 slugging percentage (seventh nationally). First-team all-league senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) is hitting .359 while adding 17 RBI and 14 runs scored, and is tied with Griffith for the team lead with nine doubles. Freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), an honorable-mention all-NJAC pick, owns a .355 average and team bests of 28 runs scored (10th in league) and 23 stolen bases (tied-fifth in conference).
 
Senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), a first-team all-league selection, is hitting .353 while adding nine doubles, four triples (fourth in conference), 18 RBI and 22 runs scored. Second-team all-NJAC senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) owns a .279 average, eight doubles, five sacrifice hits, 16 runs scored and a .984 fielding percentage.
 
Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), who was named to the All-NJAC Second Team, is 15-4 with a 1.43 ERA (fifth in conference) in 19 starts and 22 appearances inside the circle, striking out 75 (fourth in league) in 112.2 innings. The 2017 NJAC Co-Pitcher of the Year and a first-team all-conference honoree, senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) owns an 11-7 record, 1.51 ERA (sixth in conference), seven shutouts (20th in Division III) and 93 strikeouts (first in league) in 115.2 innings pitched, starting 19 of 21 appearances.
