Second-Seeded Softball to Face Third-Seeded Kean in NJAC Tournament Second Round Saturday

PITMAN, N.J. – Second-seeded and 24th-ranked William Paterson (28-9, 15-3 NJAC) will face third-seeded Kean (30-7, 12-6 NJAC) in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament Saturday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m. in Union, N.J. Live statistics  and live video will be available.
 
WP students with valid ID will be admitted for free. General Admission is $5.00, and students, senior citizens and children 12 and under will be admitted for $2.00.
 
The format for the remainder of the double-elimination tournament will be determined after the completion of the WP/Kean contests. 
 
The Pioneers are coming off a 6-3 first-round home win May 2 against fifth-seeded Stockton (21-19-1, 9-8-1 NJAC). Earlier this season, WP swept visiting No. 14 Kean, 2-1 and 4-0, on April 14. William Paterson is looking to win its fifth NJAC Tournament title (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009).
 
A member of the All-NJAC First Team, sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) leads WP with a .479 batting average (17th nationally), seven triples (first in league, 11th in Division III), five home runs (tied-fourth in conference) and 32 RBI (fifth in NJAC), and ranks second in all of Division III with a 1.000 slugging percentage. First-team all-conference senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) is hitting .365 while adding 17 RBI and 14 runs scored, and is tied with Griffith for the team lead with nine doubles. Freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), an honorable-mention all-NJAC pick, owns a .364 average and team bests of 28 runs scored (10th in league) and 23 stolen bases (fourth in conference).
 
Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), who was named to the All-NJAC Second Team, is 15-3 with a 1.35 ERA (fifth in NJAC, 38th nationally) in 18 starts and 21 appearances inside the circle, striking out 73 (tied-fourth in league) in 108.2 innings. The 2017 NJAC Co-Pitcher of the Year and a first-team all-conference honoree, senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) owns an 11-6 record, 1.56 ERA (sixth in conference), seven shutouts (14th in Division III) and 87 strikeouts (second in NJAC) in 107.2 innings pitched, starting 18 of 19 appearances.
