Softball to Host Stockton in NJAC Tournament Opener Tuesday

Second-Seeded Pioneers, Fifth-Seeded Ospreys to Meet at 4:00 p.m.

PITMAN, N.J. – Second-seeded and 20th-ranked William Paterson (27-9, 15-3 NJAC) will host fifth-seeded Stockton (20-17-1, 9-8-1 NJAC) in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Softball Tournament Tuesday, May 2, at 4:00 p.m. Live statistics and live video will be available.
 
WP students with valid ID will be admitted for free. General Admission is $5.00, and students, senior citizens and children 12 and under will be admitted for $2.00.
 
The double-elimination tournament will continue Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, at Kean.
 
On May 2, top-seeded Ramapo (27-7, 17-1 NJAC) will host sixth-seeded Montclair State (22-16, 9-9 NJAC), and third-seeded Kean (29-7, 12-6 NJAC) will host fourth-seeded Rowan (31-7, 12-6 NJAC).
 
The winner of the WP/Stockton game will take on the winner of the Kean/Rowan game on May 5 at 6:00 p.m. The loser of the WP/Stockton game will face the loser of the Ramapo/Montclair State contest in an elimination game May 5 at 2:00 p.m.
 
The Pioneers are coming off a 1-2, 7-0 split at New Jersey City (11-25, 1-17 NJAC) on April 29. Earlier this season, WP swept host Stockton, 13-1 (five innings) and 4-0, on April 2. William Paterson is looking to win its fifth NJAC Tournament title (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009).
 
Sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) leads WP with a .486 batting average, five home runs (tied-fourth in conference) and 31 RBI (tied-fifth in league), and paces all of Division III with a 1.000 slugging percentage. Senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) is hitting .357 with four triples (fourth in NJAC), 22 runs scored and 18 RBI, and is tied with Griffith and senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) for the team lead with nine doubles. Junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) owns a .355 average, seven doubles, 19 runs scored and 14 RBI, and is tied with Griffith for the team high with six triples (tied-first in conference).
 
Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) is 15-3 with a 1.35 ERA (fifth in league) in 18 starts and 21 appearances inside the circle, striking out 73 (tied-fourth in NJAC) in 108.2 innings. Classmate Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) owns a 10-6 record, 1.60 ERA (sixth in conference) and 85 strikeouts (tied-first in league) in 100.2 innings pitched, starting 17 of 18 appearances.
