Final-Inning Run Sinks Baseball at No. 16 TCNJ, 2-1

Pioneers Remain Tied for Sixth in League Standings

EWING, N.J. – A walk-off single sent the William Paterson baseball team (13-18-2, 6-9 NJAC) to a 2-1 loss at No. 16 The College of New Jersey (24-10, 12-3 NJAC) April 27.

WP is tied for sixth place in the conference standings with three games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament that begins Tuesday, May 2.

The Lions capitalized on a leadoff error and Zachary Shindler single up the middle to break the scoreless deadlock during the bottom of the third inning.

The Pioneers used a two-out walk issued to freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst), a passed ball and a single down the right-field line by senior left fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) to forge a 1-1 tie in the sixth.

After two fly balls to start the ninth, TCNJ strung together a single to right center, a walk and a base hit to left center to plate the winning run.

WP left 10 runners on base, including a man on third during the fourth, fifth and ninth innings.

Rowe was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) added a base hit.

Sophomore Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) surrendered one unearned run off four hits and two walks, posting one strikeout over 7.0 innings as the starter. Freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) faced one batter and gave up a hit, while junior Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) allowed two hits, one run and a walk with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief (2-4).

Shindler finished 3-for-4 with a double and RBI for the Lions. Junior Matt Curry picked up the win by tossing the final 0.2 scoreless inning (6-0).

William Paterson will host No. 16 The College of New Jersey Friday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m.
