Baseball Can’t Stave Off Ramapo Late

Roadrunners Rally in Ninth for 14-7 Win Against Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (12-15-2, 5-6 NJAC) carried a one-run lead into the top of the ninth inning, but Ramapo (15-14, 8-3 NJAC) rallied during its final at-bat for a 14-7 baseball victory April 20.

The Roadrunners broke the scoreless deadlock during the top of the third inning, stringing together a pair of two-out singles and a two-run triple by senior center fielder Brandon Martinez.

Ramapo tacked on three more in the fifth. A walk, sacrifice and base hit left runners on the corners with one out, followed by three consecutive RBI-singles.

The Pioneers fought back with a five-run home half of the fifth inning. Three straight one-out singles by sophomore left fielder Garett Wiedemann (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), freshman second baseman Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and freshman shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) loaded the bases for senior right fielder Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), who delivered two runs with a base hit up the middle. Junior center fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) doubled in Ferrara, and a strikeout and Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) base on balls again loaded the bags. Freshman third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and freshman designated hitter Eric Breun (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) each drew walks, forcing across two runs and tying the game at 5-5.

WP took its first lead of the game when Dorio walked, was sacrificed to second by Ferrara and scored on a Rowe single up the middle during the home half of the sixth.

The Roadrunners got the run back in the top of the seventh with a pair of bases on balls and a run-scoring single through the left side by junior designated hitter Matt Chemis.

The Pioneers staked themselves to a 7-6 lead when Ferrara and Hoagland both doubled during the home half of the eighth.

A single, walk and fielder's choice gave Ramapo runners on first and second with one out in the ninth. Chemis tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI-single up the middle, and a base on balls and hit by pitch pushed the Roadrunners ahead by an 8-7 count. Ramapo went on to score six more runs with three singles, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Rowe finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Hoagland hit a pair of doubles as part of a 3-for-5 effort that included two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore starter Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) went 4.1 innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three. Junior Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) allowed a hit and a walk during 1.2 scoreless innings, while senior Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) gave up eight runs, six hits and four walks in 2.1 innings on the hill (0-1). Freshman Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) tossed the final 0.2 inning of one-run, one-hit ball.

Martinez was 4-for-5 with a triple, five RBI and two runs scored for Ramapo. Sophomore Greg Westhelle (2-2) allowed one hit while striking out two during 0.2 inning of work to pick up the win.

William Paterson will visit Ramapo Friday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m.
