Softball Starts League Play with Sweep at Stockton

Pioneers Record 13-1, 4-0 Victories

GALLOWAY, N.J. – William Paterson (10-6, 2-0 NJAC) opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) softball play with a 13-1 (five innings), 4-0 sweep at Stockton (10-10, 0-2 NJAC) April 2.

Game One
A six-run fourth inning helped propel WP to an opening 13-1, five inning victory.

The Pioneers started the scoring with four runs in the top of the second. Sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) doubled to right center and senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) singled to left to put runners on the corners with one out. Senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) plated both with a double to right-center field, and senior center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) followed with a base hit to left. A double steal allowed Fryer to touch home, and after an Amanda Clark (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) pinch-hit infield single, WP executed the double steal again.

A one-out single by junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), a flyout and error, and a Pellios RBI-single through the left side made it a 5-0 game in the third.

The Ospreys used back-to-back doubles to push across one run during the home half of the third.

Lutas opened the fourth with a base hit and stolen base, senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) put down a bunt single and freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) reached on a sacrifice/error. Two batters later, junior second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) cleared the bases with a double into the left-center gap. Molnar doubled in Poretti, Griffith doubled in Molnar and Pellios singled in Griffith for an 11-1 advantage.

Junior pinch hitter Adelle Hickman (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) produced an infield single and Griffith homered to left to finish the scoring in the top of the fifth inning.

Griffith went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while Pellios was 3-for-4 and contributed two RBI and a run scored.

Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) tossed 3.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits with a walk and strikeout (6-1). Freshman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) pitched 2.0 innings of one-hit relief, posting two strikeouts.

Junior designated player Danielle Lugo accounted for two of Stockton's five hits. Junior starter Hannah Bibeault surrendered four runs on seven hits while registering one strikeout (5-5).

Game Two
Senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) scattered three hits during a complete-game shutout, 4-0.

An error and RBI-singles by senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and Molnar handed WP a 2-0 edge during the top of the first inning.

William Paterson tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Archibold put a base hit down the left-field line and scored after a Nicole Fryer sacrifice and throw. Three straight singles from Molnar, Griffith and Pellios drove across the game's final run.

Nicole Fryer went 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and run scored. Molnar finished 2-for-3 while collecting a run scored and RBI, and Lutas also posted a 2-for-3 effort.

Podmajersky (3-5) gave up three hits and two walks during 7.0 innings inside the circle, striking out two.

Three different players accounted for Stockton's hits. Sophomore Victoria Torp allowed 10 hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks while collecting a pair of strikeouts (5-5).

William Paterson will play a pair of games at Rutgers-Newark Tuesday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m.
