WAYNE, N.J. – Junior second baseman
Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) drilled a two-run, walk-off homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the night cap, allowing the William Paterson softball team (12-6, 4-0 NJAC) to sweep visiting The College of New Jersey (11-9, 3-2 NJAC), 7-2 and 5-4, April 8.
Game One
The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then held off a pair of Lion rallies for a 7-2 victory.
A one-out walk issued to freshman designated player
Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), an error and a base on balls for junior left fielder
Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) led to a two-run single to center field by sophomore third baseman
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) during the home half of the first inning.
WP made it 3-0 in the second as senior first baseman
Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) dropped a single into left field and was lifted for freshman pinch runner
Lexi Reale (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Two groundouts left Reale on third, and she touched home thanks to a Lion error.
Griffith manufactured a run all on her own during the bottom of the third inning, doubling to left center, then stealing third and scoring on an overthrow during the play.
A walk and two singles loaded the bases for TCNJ in the top of the fifth, and a Jenna Schwartz RBI-walk, fielder's choice and Megan Mayernik single to left center made it a 4-2 score with one out. Freshman
Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) entered in relief, denying the Lions any further offense with a lineout and a strikeout.
A
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) base on balls, Molnar single and Griffith sacrifice bunt led to a wild pitch and a 5-2 score after five innings.
The Lions had the bases loaded with no one out in the sixth, but couldn't push across a single run.
William Paterson tacked on a pair of sixth-inning insurance runs when senior shortstop
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) doubled in senior catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), and later crossed the plate herself on an attempted double steal.
Griffith went 2-for-2 at the plate, contributing a double, run scored and two RBI. Wasilak finished 2-for-4 with a pair pf doubles, an RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and a pair of walks, striking out three to improve to 7-1. Lupica earned her first career save with 2.2 innings of shutout relief, scattering five hits and a walk while collecting two punchouts.
Freshman left fielder Helena Coppola was 2-for-2 with a double for TCNJ. Junior Sam Platt (5-5) gave up eight hits, seven runs (four earned) and four walks while registering two strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Game Two
WP came out on top of a back-and forth second game, using Poretti's walk-off homer for a 5-4 win.
The Pioneers struck first, taking advantage of bases on balls issued to Wasilak, Archibold and Molnar as well as a wild pitch for a 1-0 first-inning lead.
Nicole Fryer walked to open the bottom of the third, and a single by Molnar was misplayed by the center fielder, allowing both runners to reach the plate and make it a 3-0 edge in the third.
The Lions leveled the score during their next at-bat thanks to back-to-back doubles, a base on balls and another two-bagger.
TCNJ took its first lead during the top of the seventh inning when a two-strike hit by pitch, a groundout and a single plated Coppola.
WP opened the home half of the seventh with a strikeout and flyout, but Griffith got aboard via a walk. Poretti then launched a home run over the left-field fence to end the game and finish off the sweep.
Five different players had a hit for the Pioneers.
Senior
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up three runs on five hits and one walk during 3.2 innings as the starter, striking out two. Castelli picked up the win in relief (8-1), surrendering two hits and one run with a pair of strikeouts.
