Softball Runs Win Streak to 11 Games with Pair of Victories at Montclair State

Pioneers Defeat Red Hawks, 3-1 and 9-2

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (16-6, 8-0 NJAC) extended its win streak to 11 games with 3-1 and 9-2 victories at Montclair State (14-12, 3-5 NJAC) April 11.

Game One
The Pioneers held off a late scoring threat to start the day with a 3-1 win.

Senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) opened the top of the second inning with a walk, and three batters later she touched the plate after a triple to left center by senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) for a 1-0 lead.

WP made it a 3-0 game in the fourth. Senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off with a double to center, advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Nicole Fryer put down a bunt single. A fielder's choice, stolen base and RBI-single up the middle from senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) plated freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook).

A base hit, sacrifice, groundout and run-scoring single got MSU on to the scoreboard during the home half of the sixth.

MSU used a base hit and two walks to load the bases with one out in the second, but a lineout double play ended the scoring threat and the game.

Nicole Fryer had a triple as part of a 2-for-4 effort, driving in two runs. Wasilak was 4-for-4, adding a double and RBI.

Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) pitched the complete game, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out two (10-1).

Sophomore left fielder Lia Stamile went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Red Hawks. Junior Sam Keating took the loss (4-4), giving up nine hits, three runs and two walks while striking out one over 7.0 innings.

Game Two
WP blew the game wide open with a six-run seventh inning, pulling away for a 9-2 victory.

A walk by junior second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial), a Kim Fryer fielder's choice, an RBI-double to center field by Pellios, a base hit from senior pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) and a run-scoring double to left by Nicole Fryer made it a 2-0 margin during the top of the second inning.

Three consecutive singles, as well as an error, scored one MSU run in the fourth, and the Red Hawks tied it at 2-2 in the fifth with a base hit, sacrifice, wild pitch and RBI-groundout.

Junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) was hit by a one-out pitch during the top of the sixth inning, Pellios added a base hit and Nicole Fryer had a two-out run-scoring single to hand the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

Six runs during its final at-bat allowed William Paterson to pull away. Sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and Poretti hit one-out singles, and after a wild pitch and popup, Molnar tripled in both runners. Pellios delivered Molnar with a base hit up the middle before being replaced by freshman pinch runner Lexi Reale (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Podmajersky hit an infield single, Nicole Fryer plated a run with a base hit to left-center field, and sophomore designated player Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) sent home two runs with a double to right.

Nicole Fryer finished 3-for-5 with a double, run scored and three RBI. Pellios was 3-for-4 and produced a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Molnar and Gruelich each contributed a pair of RBI.

Podmajersky (5-5) pitched the first 6.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned), nine hits and one walk while collecting three strikeouts. Freshman Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) recorded the final two outs, one by strikeout.

Stamile and junior right fielder Noel Hodgins were both 2-for-3 for Montclair State. Freshman starter Nicole Majewski took the loss after surrendering 10 hits, five runs and a walk while posting two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work (5-4).

William Paterson will travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 12, at 4:00 p.m.
