PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The William Paterson softball team (18-6) ran its win streak to 13 games with 9-2 and 3-0 victories at St. Joseph's-Long Island (12-10) April 12.
Game One
The Pioneers stormed out to an early 8-0 lead on their way to a 9-2 victory.
Senior right fielder
Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) started the game with a double to left and freshman designated player
Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) immediately followed with an RBI-single to center. She stole second and moved to third on a groundout before sophomore third baseman
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) dropped down a bunt single to plate the second run. Junior left fielder
Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) tripled to drive in Griffith, junior second baseman
Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) scored Griffith with a run-scoring groundout, and a two-bagger by senior first baseman
Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and an RBI-single from senior catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) made it a 5-0 score.
Three base hits by Archibold, junior shortstop
Adelle Hickman (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) and freshman third baseman
Alex Lee (Newark, N.J./Benedictine Academy) led to a two-out error and a Poretti two-run double, extending the lead to 8-0 during the top of the second inning.
WP added one more in the fourth as Lee
had an infield base hit, Molnar doubled to center and freshman second baseman
Lexi Reale (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's) singled.
The Golden Eagles scored both of their runs during the home half of the fourth, putting together three base hits, a walk and a groundout.
Poretti was 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Molnar collected a double and triple, while Archibold had a pair of hits.
Senior
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) tossed 5.1 shutout innings, scattering four hits while striking out six (11-1). Freshman
Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks during the 1.2 innings.
Sophomore third baseman Lyndsay Smocer and junior designated player Sandra Foster each went 2-for-3 for SJLI. Junior starter Lauren Buturla gave up five runs and five hits in 0.2 inning inside the circle (3-5).
Game Two
Freshman pitcher
Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) earned her first career win with a complete-game 3-0 shutout.
The Pioneers broke the scoreless deadlock during the top of the third when Grubiak led off with a double to left,
Nicole Fryer successfully sacrificed, Archibolad and senior shortstop
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) were issued bases on balls, and Griffith lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.
The lead doubled to 2-0 in the fourth thanks to a one-out infield hit by
Kim Fryer, a stolen base and a Grubiak RBI-single up the middle.
WP finished the scoring during the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit Molnar single, an error and a
Nicole Fryer run-scoring base hit to the pitcher.
Grubiak was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored at the plate. She also scattered three hits while walking six and striking out one over 7.0 innings (1-0).
Junior starter Theresa Cardello surrendered two hits and one run during 2.2 innings, posting one strikeout (6-3).
William Paterson will host No. 14 Kean for a pair of games Friday, April 14, at 12:00 p.m.
