Cohen Earns 600th Softball Victory as Pioneers Sweep Drew

Pioneers Secure Pair of 8-0 Victories

Game #2 Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Hallie Cohen earned her 600th victory as the William Paterson softball head coach as the Pioneers (8-6) earned a pair of 8-0 wins against visiting Drew (3-11)  March 30.

Game One
Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) faced just one batter more than a minimum while registering an 8-0, six-inning victory.

The Pioneers posted a pair of runs during their first at-bat. Freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) drew a one-out walk and stole second before an error on an infield ground ball left Archibold at  third and senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) on second. A base hit up the middle by junior second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) plated both runners for a 2-0 edge.

A base hit through the left side of the infield by senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and a triple to the bottom of the fence in center field by sophomore third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) pushed it to a 3-0 advantage in the second.

Nicole Fryer opened the bottom of the third inning with a base on balls and later touched home thanks to a triple to right-center field off the bat of junior left fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), making it a 4-0 game.

Griffith started the fourth frame by drilling a triple to left center and freshman Amanda Clark (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) immediately followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle to extend the lead to 5-0.

WP finished the scoring with a three-run sixth inning. Kim Fryer led off with a double to center, and a flyout, wild pitch and strikeout were followed by a two-out base on balls for freshman second baseman Lexi Reale (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's). An error plated the first run, freshman right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) singled in Reale, and Poretti drove in junior Adelle Hickman (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) with a walk-off base hit up the middle.

Poretti was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Griffith finished 2-for-3 with a pair of triples, one RBI and a run scored. Molnar went 2-for-3 while posting a double, triple and RBI, and Kim Fryer was 2-for-3 and contributed a double and two runs scored.

Castelli (5-1) struck out three over 6.0 innings and allowed just one hit, a soft bloop single over the second baseman's head during the top of the first inning.

Senior Emma Agostini (2-5) surrendered eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits and three walks, striking out two during 5.2 innings inside the circle.

Game Two
Senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) scattered two hits over 5.0 shutout innings for another 8-0 victory.

Kim Fryer reached base thanks to a one-out single, later stole second and advanced to third via an infield single by senior center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) during the bottom of the second inning. Lutas moved to second on defensive indifference, and senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) knocked in both runners with her triple to the left-center gap. Archibold made it a 3-0 game with a base hit through the right side.

Molnar's infield single was followed by a towering home run to left off the bat of Griffith, handing WP a 5-0 advantage in the third.

Wasilak opened the home half of the fourth with a double down the left-field line and Archibold beat out the throw for a bunt single. A stolen base and an error on a sacrifice attempt by Tighe scored Wasilak, Poretti's fielder's choice plated Archibold, and Griffith's RBI-triple pushed the lead to 8-0.

Wasilak finished 3-for-3 and added a double, triple, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Archibold was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Griffith went 2-for-3 while collecting a triple, home run, three RBi and a run scored.

Podmajersky (2-5) struck out seven without issuing a walk for the complete-game shutout.

Sophomore Bethany Budner fell to 0-5, giving up eight runs (four earned) and 11 hits with three strikeouts over 4.0 innings.

Cohen owns a 600-304-4 record in her 23rd season leading the Pioneers, and is 795-460-5 in her 39th season overall.

William Paterson will start conference play Saturday, April 1, with a doubleheader at Stockton at 1:00 p.m.
