Softball Splits Final Pair of Games in Florida

Pioneers Lose 5-4 to Transylvania, Win 5-3 Against St. Scholastica

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (6-6) ended its stay at the Rebel Spring Games with a 5-4 loss to Transylvania (11-5) and a 5-3 victory against St. Scholastica (5-9) March 18.

Game One
Four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed Transylvania to secure a 5-4 win.

Senior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) singled to shortstop with one out in the top of the third and was replaced by sophomore pinch runner Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional). Senior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) followed with a triple to right center, and after a walk and stolen base by freshman pinch hitter Amanda Clark (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), senior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) hit an RBI-single to left field for a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers added another run in the fifth as senior pinch hitter Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and Wasilak both singled and an error allowed Lutas to scramble home.

Transylvania took advantage of a base hit, two-out steal, error, stolen base, walk and hit by pitch to make it a 3-1 game.

Junior catcher Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) started the top of the seventh with a walk, advanced to third after junior center fielder Kara Molnar (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) doubled to right, and scored thanks to a double-play groundout by freshman pinch hitter Susan Mather (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), pushing WP ahead by a 4-1 count.

Two base hits and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Transy with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk forced in one run, and sophomore first baseman/pitcher Meg Liter's double cleared the bases for the walkoff win.

Wasilak finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Molnar went 2-for-4 with a double.

Castelli was 2-for-3 at the plate, and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five during 6.2 innings inside the circle (4-1).

Liter was 1-for-4 with a three-run double, and threw the final 3.0 innings for the win, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks (2-0).

Game Two
WP recovered from a 3-2 deficit for a 5-3 victory against St. Scholastica.

CSS struck first, using a double, sacrifice and single for a 1-0 lead during the top of the second inning.

A base hit, fielder's choice and stolen base left senior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) on second base with one out in the bottom of the second. Freshman designated player Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) tripled her in, and two batters later Lutas doubled for a 2-1 WP edge.

Two base hits left runners on the corners for the Saints during the top of the third, and a wild pitch tied the score.  A base on balls and a double then pushed St. Scholastica ahead by a 3-2 count.

William Paterson took back the lead during the home half of the fifth. Wasilak drew a leadoff walk and senior first baseman Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) singled to left before a Clark fielder's choice resulted in an out at third. Kim Fryer's walk loaded the bases, and Nicole Fryer later doubled in two runners for a 4-3 advantage,

Poretti opened the sixth with a home run to left for the game's final run.

Nicole Fryer was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Lutas went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI, and Poretti finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer.

Senior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) pitched the first 2.0 innings, giving up three runs and six hits while posting two strikeouts. Freshman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) earned her first victory with 5.0 shutout innings, scattering five hits and three walks with two strikeouts (1-0).

Junior left fielder Cindi Rydlund went 3-for-4 and scored a run for CSS. Senior Chrisi Mizera (3-4) surrendered five runs on 10 hits and four walks, striking out four.
