WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's swimming and diving team (1-0) began the 2017-18 season with a convincing, 110-74, victory against FDU-Florham (0-3) in the team's home opener Oct. 21.
Junior
Quinn Reynolds (Delran, N.J./Delran) led the way for WP, touching first with quality times in the 50 free (26.49) and 100 back (1:04.33). Reynolds reached the wall .51 second ahead of freshman teammate
Kelsey Vespe (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Audubon) in the 50 free. Her margin of victory was larger in the 100 back, finishing nearly 12 seconds ahead of sophomore teammate
Janice Costa (Clifton, N.J./Bergen Arts and Science). Reynolds posted the best time of the four WP swimmers in the 200 free relay, registering a 26.28 mark as the Pioneers won the event by default with a 1:49.50, earning 11 points.
While Vespe narrowly missed out on her first collegiate individual victory, classmate
Iris Santos (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) claimed her inaugural win for the Pioneers, out-touching the competition in the 100 free (59.30). Vespe was just behind Santos, earning second with a solid time of 1:00.48. Santos also garnered a second-place finish in the 200 free (2:12.94), earning four points for WP as a runner-up in the event.
Ashlew Lawler bolstered WP's final score with two individual wins, posting a 188.63 in the one-meter dive and a 219.01 in the three-meter.
Junior
Casey Murphy (Hardyston, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) posted a pair of runner-up times, recording eight team points. Murphy came in second in the 1,000 free (12:16.81) and came back from a significant distance to earn the second-best time in the 500 free (5:51.56), clipping third-place finisher, FDU-Florham's Samantha Irace (5:51.86), by just .30 second.
Women's swimming and diving topped Baruch on the road last year, 107-96, and will look for the same outcome when it hosts the Bearcats (0-0) Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6:00 p.m.
