Rutgers-Camden Goal in 110th Minute Downs Women’s Soccer on Road, 2-1

Scarlet Raptors Break 1-1 Draw With 44 Ticks Left on Clock in Double-Overtime

CAMDEN N.J.  – With just 44 ticks left on the clock, Rutgers-Camden (7-8, 3-5 NJAC) freshman forward Meghan Wachira scored the golden goal to hand William Paterson women's soccer (9-7-1, 2-5-1 NJAC) a 2-1 loss Oct. 21.

Wachira scored both of Rutgers-Camden's goals Saturday, notching an equalizer in the 49th minute after consecutive helpers from senior forward Cassidy McSorley and junior midfielder Melissa Peel, and finished the game in the final minute of double-overtime by beating senior goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) from inside the box upon receiving another Peel assist.

WP broke a 0-0 stalemate when Moffitt recorded her third penalty kick score of the season and fifth goal of the year in the 34th minute, tucking the free opportunity inside the right post for the 1-0 lead.

WP generated a number of viable chances throughout the second half, forcing Scarlet Raptors senior goalkeeper Katie Gurba to make five saves in the second half alone. Midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) challenged goal in the 46th minute, sophomore forward Carla LaRocca (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) tested Gurba in the 50th minute, sophomore back Ashley Cozzi (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) put a shot on goal in the 58th frame and classmate and midfielder Moffitt generated another chance that was saved in the 66th minute. Senior forward Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) put up WP's final shot on goal during regulation, having the threat stopped by Gurba in the 74th minute.

The Pioneers outshot Rutgers-Camden 4-0 in the first 19 minutes and 16 seconds of overtime play but weren't able to capitalize. Overall, women's soccer put 19 shots on goal to 12 for the Scarlet Raptors, and also held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. WP handled heavy pressure from Camden, absorbing 16 fouls, two of which were yellow cards, while only committing five.

Sandelli played out the entirety of the clock in front of the net for WP, making five saves. Gurba made stops on 11 WP shots in 110 minutes in goal for Rutgers-Camden.

The Pioneers have seven points in New Jersey Athletic Conference play and are seventh in the league standings, one spot outside of qualification for NJAC Tournament with one match remaining. A WP victory over Rutgers-Newark Wednesday, Oct. 25, combined with anything but a draw in the Stockton (nine points) and Rutgers-Camden (nine points) match that same evening will give the Pioneers a berth in the NJAC Tournament.

WP vies for a spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament when it hosts Rutgers-Newark (8-8-1, 2-5 NJAC) for Senior Night Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 6:00 p.m.
