Women’s Soccer Edged by Late Rutgers-Newark Goal on Senior Night

Pioneers Honor 11 Seniors in Regular-Season Finale

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J.  – Tied 0-0 in the 80th minute, Rutgers-Newark (9-9-1, 3-6-0 NJAC) scored the decisive goal on a header coming off a corner kick as the William Paterson women's soccer team (9-8-1, 2-6-1 NJAC) was edged 1-0 Oct. 24 on Senior Night.

Seniors Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick), Lauren McHugh (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), Liz Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro), Lilly Navarra (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), Jacquelin Nelson (Boonton, N.J./Morris Knolls), Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union), Ellie Palmer (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek), Diana Perez (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.), Celine Samaniego (Maywood, N.J./Bergen Tech), Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) and Torii Zamorski (Linden, N.J./Union Catholic) were recognized for their careers prior to the match alongside family and friends. The 11 senior players combined to contribute 576 matches played for the Pioneers throughout their career.

The loss stifled WP's New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament hopes as they were in need of at least a win and anything but a tie in the concurrent match between Rutgers-Camden and Stockton.

Both teams traded blows until Rutgers-Newark sophomore back Iné Collins broke the gridlock with the game's lone goal, redirected a corner kick from junior forward Juliana Ceballos with a header from the middle of the box.

The Pioneers applied the pressure early, generating their best scoring sequence in the 8th minute of play coming off a corner kick from Oliveira. Freshman midfielder Danielle Dachowski (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) had a header opportunity stopped by a reactionary block from senior goalkeeper Diana Carvalho, leading to back-to-back shots from Navarra that were denied thanks to a collective effort from the Scarlet Raiders backline. Oliveira tried once more but had her shot roll left of the net as the threat was quelled.

WP outshot Rutgers-Newark 6-4 the rest of the half, and 15-10 overall, but couldn't convert as the team's stayed in the stalemate. Dachowski was the most aggressive attacker on the night, putting up a team-high eight shots, four of which were on goal, in here first career start. Sophomore back Ashley Cozzi (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) also tested goal once as the Pioneers forced Carvalho to make five saves to ensure the win.

Sandelli made two stops on the night, giving her 208 on her career, good for fourth on WP's all-time list.

Women's soccer will await a decision regarding their potential selection to continue on to postseason play in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
