WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team (2-0) used seven individual victories and a triple-winning performance from senior
Anthony Taboadela (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) to clip FDU-Florham (0-3) in WP's home opener Oct. 21, 99-88.
The senior notched his second-consecutive meet as a triple winner, taking home the 200 free (1:49.75), 100 fly (56.41) and 100 back (56.91).
Senior
Sammuel Melendez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) added two wins, securing the 100 breast (1:07.69) by a significant margin of 6.26 seconds, as well as the 200 yard IM (2:09.27). Melendez was 8.78 seconds quicker than FDU-Florham's Nick DiBenedetto, who finished second.
FDU did not feature diving, but WP divers, sophomore
Emmanuel Garcia (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and junior
William Barrett (Pompton Lakes, N.J. /Pompton Lakes ), competed in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. Barrett bested his teammate in the one-meter dive with a score of 163.28, and Garcia posted a 165.16 to claim the three-meter dive.
Sophomore
Eamon Logue (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) posted solid times, edging junior
Drew Macchia (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) by just .18 second to take home the 50 free (23.31). It was the first time that Logue has ousted Macchia in the event. Logue nearly joined Melendez as a double-winner, finishing second in the 100 free (51.56), just off the time of FDU-Florham's Bohdan Semak (50.98).
A pair of in-season personal bests were set by sophomore
Jimmy Sharkey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West), who touched second in both the 500 free (5:37.03) and 1,000 free (11:38.29).
WP had three entries in the 200 medley relay as FDU-Florham did not compete in the event. The quartet of freshman
Thomas Haughey (Folsom, Pa. /Ridley), sophomore
Terrence Hopkins (Landing, N.J./Roxbury), freshman
Jonathan Vela (Prospect Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and junior
Ryan Achyuthuni (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) finished first (1:54.07).
