WAYNE, N.J. – Women's soccer got a little bit of help from nearly everyone in its lineup Monday as the Pioneers (9-6-1) defeated Brooklyn (3-11-0) 10-0, scoring the most goals in a single-game since WP did so in a 10-0 rout of Staten Island Oct. 19, 2009.
Eight different players tallied scores for women's soccer, the Pioneers outshot the Bulldogs 37-2 and five players had at least one assist, led by senior back
Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union) who had four helpers, setting the 2017 New Jersey Athletic Conference single-game record. Oliveira's night moved her into fifth place all-time in WP's career-assists charts.
Sophomore back
Ashley Cozzi (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) tied for the night's lead in goals by scoring twice, finding the back of the net in the ninth minute and later in the 47th minute. Cozzi's first goal came when she took a through ball from sophomore midfielder
Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and found space inside the near post from the left side of the box.
Bowe was the beneficiary of a two-pass setup in WP's next score. Off a corner from Oliveira, senior midfielder
Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) headed a pass inside the box that Bowe tapped on frame and inside the right post for the 2-0 advantage in the 23rd minute. The trend of the assisting player scoring on the next goal continued just 31 seconds later when Favo lofted an arching shot under the crossbar from the top of the box. Oliveira dished out the Pioneers' third score.
Cozzi notched her second goal of the evening, and second of the season, just 96 seconds out of the break. Having her back to the goal at the top of the box, sophomore forward
Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) directed a pass out to Cozzi who volleyed a shot towards the goal and inside the left post.
WP's first unassisted goal and fifth on the night came with a little help from Brooklyn freshman goalkeeper Dajanna Pena. Senior back
Ellie Palmer (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) took a shot that one-hopped off the left post, off Pena and back over the goalline for a 5-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
The second two-pass sequence leading to a score ensued in WP's sixth goal in the 56th minute.
Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and senior back
Diana Perez (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.) worked together to find an open sophomore forward
Carla LaRocca (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), who struck a shot inside the left post from the top of the box.
The Pioneers scored its next four goals in a flurry over the next seven minutes. The cluster of goals began in the 57th minute when Oliveria played a short ball off a corner kick that senior back Jaacquelin Nelson put towards goal and into the back of the net.
Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) helped screen Dajanna Pena as Nelson's shot came on frame.
Adelman scored her first of two unassisted goals in the 60th minute, tucking a shot inside the left post off a breakaway. Just two minutes and forty seconds later, Perez used an Oliveira corner and leapt to flick a header in for the Pioneers' ninth goal. Adelman completed WP's scoring in the 63rd minute, leaking through the Brooklyn backline before depositing a shot inside the upper-right 90. Adelman also notched her 14th goal of the season in the process, repossessing the lead for the most goals in the NJAC.
Brooklyn only generated two shots, both of which were saved by senior goalkeeper
Torii Zamorski (Linden, N.J./Union Catholic). Zamorski and senior goalkeeper
Liz Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) split time in goal, earning 45 minutes apiece.
The Pioneers travel to face Rutgers-Camden (6-8, 2-5 NJAC) Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1:00 p.m.
