Late Goal Spoils Mauro’s Career Night, Field Hockey Falls to Stevens by 3-2 Count

Senior Forward Scores Both Goals for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior forward Andrea Mauro (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) twice handed the William Paterson field hockey team (2-11) a lead, but a late goal allowed Stevens (6-7) to escape with a 3-2 victory Oct. 13.

Sophomore forward Michaela Meillier (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) led a break up the right side of the field and threaded a pass through traffic to Mauro, who chipped a perfect shot over the goalie and into the right side of the cage at the 15:31 mark of the first half.

The Pioneers staved off 19 consecutive corners awarded to Stevens during the game's first 55 minutes, but the Ducks cashed in on their 20th opportunity when senior midfielder Victoria Zanlunghi inserted to classmate Cassidy O'Hearn on the near side, and she drilled a shot from the right wing.

WP converted a corner of its own less than five minutes later when sophomore back Carly Miceli (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) dribbled in and found Mauro on the doorstep of the goal, and she knocked the ball past the defense for her second strike of the night and third goal of her career.

Stevens came up with the equalizer again, this time at the 63:38 mark when junior midfielder Regan Littell sent a pass from the left wing to the goal mouth and senior forward Victoria Alvarez got her stick on it for another penalty-corner goal.

A bad clearance a few feet in front of goal allowed the opportunistic Alvarez to collect the game winner with 3:43 remaining in the contest.

Pioneer junior goalie Mallory Rickerhauser (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) collected five saves for the Pioneers, and freshman Nicole Mottole made five stops for the Ducks.

William Paterson will return to conference action Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Ramapo at 4:00 p.m.
