WAYNE, N.J. – Three second half goals proved to be too much for the William Paterson field hockey team (2-10) to overcome as the Pioneers came up short against Misericordia University (5-8) in a non-conference matchup 3-1 Wednesday evening at Wightman Stadium.

Sophomore
Shannon Super (Oaklyn, N.J./Collingswood) netted the only goal for William Paterson in the loss, converting a penalty stroke in the in the 59th minute of the match after her initial shot was blocked by a Cougar defender on the goal line. The tally had evened the scoring at 1-1 before two late Misericordia goals put the game out of reach. Junior goalkeeper
Mallory Rickerhauser (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) finished with three saves in cage for the Pioneers while her counterpart, Katelyn Campbell, tallied one save for the Cougars.

Neither team was able to create many offensive opportunities in the opening 35 minutes, as the first half proved to be a defensive struggle with both teams tied 0-0 at the halftime break. The second half proved to be a different story however, as the teams combined for four goals in a span of eight minutes. Colby Eldridge put home the game's opening strike for the Cougars, scoring from the top of the arc off of a penalty corner to put Misericordia up 1-0. The lead did not last long however as the Pioneers converted their next offensive chance, drawing a corner to set up Super's penalty stroke and eventual goal to tie the score three minutes later. The quick strikes continued as Misericordia came right back down the field and retook the lead on a shot by Kyleigh Knell near the penalty stroke line. Two minutes later the Cougars capitalized off of another penalty corner to put the game out of reach for good.

The Pioneers are back in action on Friday, October 13 when they kick off homecoming with a non-conference matchup with Stevens Institute of Technology beginning at 7:00 p.m.
