Sandelli Ties Season-High in Saves, Women’s Soccer Settles for 0-0 Draw With Montclair State

Pioneers Take First Draw of Season Against NJAC-Undefeated Montclair State

WAYNE, N.J.  – Senior goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) tied a season-high with eight saves as women's soccer (8-5-1, 2-3-1 NJAC) tallied a team-point by settling for its first draw of the season against Montclair State (6-3-4, 4-0-2 NJAC) in a slick and rainy match. For the Pioneers it was their first draw of 2017 and their first match resulting in a tie since locking up, 1-1, with Coast Guard Sept. 3, 2016.

No save required more effort than Sandelli's stop in the 95th minute of play when she dove and used every bit of her gloves to deflect a shot from freshman forward Melanie Cunha. This was only 83 seconds after Sandelli stopped Cunha on a previous attempt.

Sandelli and the Pioneer backline evaded trouble once more in the ninth and 10th minutes of play, when Montclair sophomore forward Emily Beenders had a shot blocked by senior back Diana Perez (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.), sophomore back Julia Kelly was denied by a save from Sandelli and freshman back Catherine Carnivale bounced harmlessly off the left post. The Red Hawks' freshman forward Maddy McLelland bounced the shot off the crossbar in the 51st minute as both teams kept the crossbars on both ends of the field busy.

WP wasn't without chances, being led in shots by freshman forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), who posted four shots, two of which were on goal.

Adelman was just inches from changing the complexion of the game when she created space and caromed a shot off the upper-left portion of the left post in the sixth minute. Adelman was just off the mark again in the 68th minute, placing a shot on frame that glanced off the post.

The Pioneers' best chance between the two overtime periods came in the 98th and 99th minutes of play. Senior back Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union) broke ahead of the Montclair State defense but had her shot saved by freshman keeper Phoebe Bledsoe in the 98th minute. 36 seconds later, Adelman mustered up another shot that Bledsoe handled, keeping the stalemate intact. Bledsoe made four saves all-told.

MSU was assigned three yellow cards in a game that featured on-and-off raindrops and 22 total fouls.

The women's soccer team heads to Stockton (5-9-1, 1-5-0 NJAC) for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 14.
