Women’s Soccer Draws Coast Guard, 1-1

Moffitt Scores for Pioneers

NEW LONDON, CONN. – Freshman midfielder Lorraine Moffitt (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) found the back of the net as the William Paterson women's soccer team (1-0-1) played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Coast Guard (0-0-1) Sept. 3.

Coast Guard dominated possession early in the match as senior Terry Netusil settled a ball at the top of William Paterson's 18-yard box and sent a volley towards goal, but it was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury).

Netusil would get involved in the attack again as she took a pass from freshman Claire Hurley at the top of the box, but Sandelli was again equal to the task.

In the 23rd minute, Hurley had an opportunity as senior Brianna Grisell split the defense with a pass to put Hurley in on goal. She took a shot from the right side but Sandelli came sliding out to make the save and knock the ball out for a corner.

The Pioneers put their first shot on goal midway through the first half as freshman forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) got free down the left side and came charging into the Bears' penalty box. She attempted a shot, but CG sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Boohar sprawled to her right to make the stop.

Less than a minute after that save, WP struck as junior back Adrianna Oliveira's (Union, N.J./Union) corner found Moffitt in the six-yard box for a one-touch shot and goal with 26:33 remaining in the half.

Coast Guard responded right before the end of the half as Hurley once again got free on the right side of the Pioneers' penalty box. Her attempt beat Sandelli but knocked off the crossbar and back into play. Senior Michelle Hernandez was there, however, to meet the rebound and knock home the tying goal.

William Paterson nearly got the go-ahead goal just before the break when Adelman struck a shot that Boohar turned aside.

Netusil threatened less than 10 minutes into the second period. Her shot looked headed for the right corner, but Sandelli was able to make a diving fingertip save.

Junior Gabby Auzenbergs sent a cross in from the left all the way to the back post for sophomore Kali Borden, who put a header back across goal to the foot of senior Katie Clark. She blasted a shot that was blocked by a Pioneer defender.

During the first extra period, Adelman again tested Boohar with a shot that was halted and held for the fourth Cougar save of the game.

Coast Guard had its best opportunity to win the game in the second overtime as Borden passed the ball to Clark on the right side of the Pioneers' penalty area. Clark worked the ball past her defender and sent a shot that was just wide of the right post.

Sandelli collected 10 saves for WP, and Boohar had five for Coast Guard.

The Pioneers will host Centenary Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
