Tennis Falls in Tightly-Contested Season Opener, 5-4

Pioneers Drop Decision to St. Joseph’s-Long Island

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson tennis team (0-1) lost a closely-contested season opener, 5-4, to visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island (1-0) Sept. 2.
 
Senior Brittany LaBruna (Bloomingdale, N.J./Continental Academy) and freshman Kaworu Ishikawa (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) were both double winners. LaBruna posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles, Ishikawa earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles, and the two combined for an 8-2 first-doubles victory.
 
Sophomore Stephanie Doot (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) battled back for a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 10-5 win at third singles.
 
The Pioneers will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 7, at home against Farmingdale State at 5:00 p.m.
