Women’s Soccer Rolls to 9-0 Season-Opening Victory

Pioneers Cruise Past Medgar Evers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (1-0) rolled to a 9-0 season-opening victory against visiting Medgar Evers (0-1) Sept. 2.

The Pioneers wasted little time against the Cougars, who fielded just eight players. Senior back Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) knocked in a loose ball off a corner kick 130 seconds into the contest, and at the 4:30 mark junior back Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union) led senior midfielder Sidney Gabrich (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) for a long breakaway.

Junior midfielder Celine Samaniego (Maywood, N.J./Bergen County Tech) converted a loose ball in the box in the sixth minute, followed by a Jacquelin Nelson (Boonton, N.J./Morris Knolls) corner kick that was knocked in by freshman forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) at the 10:01 mark.

Adelman's cross from the right side was scored by junior midfielder Lauren McHugh (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) in the 15th minute, and freshman midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) got on the board 15 minutes later on a breakaway.

Bowe struck again at the 30:14 mark, striking an Ashley Cozzi (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) cross. Bowe then finished off her trick, directing a shot from 15 yards out that was misplayed by the Medgar Evers keeper in the 35th minute.

WP finished the scoring at the 63:04 mark as junior midfielder Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) played a cross from the left side and freshman forward Carla LaRocca (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) tucked it inside the post. The referee halted the match with 19:57 remaining.

Sophomore Torii Zamorski (Linden, N.J./Union Catholic) did not need to make a save, as the Pioneers enjoyed a 24-0 shot advantage. Freshman Tasheka James had four stops for the Cougars.

The Pioneers will play at Coast Guard Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1:00 p.m.
