EWING, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (4-1-1, 0-1 NJAC) suffered its first loss of the season, a 7-0 decision at The College of New Jersey (3-0-1, 1-0 NJAC), to open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Sept. 17.
The Lions used three first-half goals to seize control early. Freshman midfielder Joriam Rivera sent a pass to junior midfielder Elizabeth Thoresen, who received and quickly turned past her mark. She split two defenders to get inside the box and drilled a shot in the left pocket to give TCNJ a 1-0 lead at the 31:32 mark.
Junior forward Hannah Richman followed with her first goal of the season less than 15 minutes later. Freshman midfielder Despina Liandis flicked a header off of a throw-in and Richman raced down the left side and finished to make it a two-goal advantage. In the 41st minute, freshman midfielder Alexa Petritto bent a high corner from the left side that sailed over the outstretched hands of WP keeper sophomore goalkeeper
Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) and into the goal.
Thoresen was brought down from behind going in on goal during the 66th minute and the Lions were awarded a penalty kick. Junior back Abigail Emmert converted the PK to make it 4-0. Freshman midfielder Haley Bodden netted her first collegiate goal less than four minutes later before Richman took a feed from the end-line from Liandis during the 75th minute and hit a one-timer for her second goal of the contest. Freshman midfielder Alex Beatty capped the scoring with her first career goal, blasting a shot from 30 yards out into the top right corner at the 87:14 mark.
Sandelli made 10 stops for WP, and senior Jessica Tweeder and freshman Nicole DiPasquale combined for one save and the TCNJ shutout.
