WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (3-3-1, 0-1 NJAC) came up short in a 2-0 loss against The College of New Jersey (4-3, 1-0 NJAC) in the Pioneers' New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) home opener Sept. 17.
TCNJ got on the board in the sixth minute when senior forward Sean Etheridge tucked a header inside the left post, courtesy of a cross from sophomore midfielder/forward Nick Sample.
The Lions would later extend their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when senior forward Thomas Hogue used some open space to pocket a ball in the upper-left corner from 15 yards out.
WP was not without a number of opportunities as it generated five shots on goal and held the corner kick margin, 5-1. Freshman midfielder
Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) tested TCNJ goalkeeper Dan Walsh at the 24:54 mark with a point-blank shot on frame that Walsh was able to deflect wide.
The Pioneers put together another opportunity in the 81st minute on a shot poked right of the right post by freshman midfielder
Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick). Just two minutes later, freshman midfielder
Darwin Cruz (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) put WP's final shot on goal from the top of the box before it was saved.
Freshman keeper
Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) posted a five-save day. His counterpart Walsh matched him with five stops.
The Pioneers travel to Immaculata on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for a 7:00 p.m. match.
