Field Hockey Falls Short in Second Overtime, 3-2

Pioneers Lose to DeSales After Second-Half Rally

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (4-3) rallied for two second-half goals to force overtime, but visiting DeSales (3-4) scored the game winner during the second extra session for a 3-2 field hockey victory Sept. 17.

Senior forward Alexa Beaumont converted the first opportunity of the game, knocking in a shot from close range for a 1-0 Bulldog lead 4:13 into the contest.

The Pioneers seemingly had the equalizer, but a goal was called back in the 15th minute. WP was also awarded a penalty stroke with 8:54 remaining in the first half, but the attempt sailed wide of the right post.

Freshman forward Christie Hansen doubled the DeSales advantage when she finished a loose ball during a penalty corner in the 44th minute.

WP's comeback started at the 60:19 mark when senior midfielder Meghin Stanton (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) buried a penalty stroke inside the left post. Senior forward Maureen Gill (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) then forced overtime when she got her stick onto a bouncing ball, redirecting it into the left side of the cage with 61 seconds to play in regulation.

The Pioneers had two quality chances during the extra time, the first a Gill shot wide right on a penalty corner four minutes into the first session, and the second a flurry of shots and saves less than five minutes into the second OT.

Hansen came up with the game winner with 6:09 left, scoring off her own rebound during a corner.

Sophomore Mallory Rickerhauser (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) made five saves for WP, and freshman Katarina Polyviou notched 12 stops for DeSales.

The Pioneers will host Vassar Monday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
