Women’s Soccer Extends Win Streak to Three Matches with 3-1 Triumph

Pioneers Defeat Wilkes, See Shutout Streak Snapped

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team (4-0-1) saw its shutout streak snapped but still managed to win its third straight match, posting a 3-1 triumph against visiting  Wilkes (1-3) Sept. 14.

The Pioneers struck almost immediately, as senior midfielder Sidney Gabrich (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) dribbled toward the right end line and cut a pass to freshman forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) on the right side of the box. She chipped a shot to the far corner, handing WP a 1-0 edge 3:08 into the contest.

Amanda Carmichael (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) nearly doubled the advantage during the 26th minute, but Wilkes keeper Alyssa Young charged off her line and snuffed out a blast by the senior midfielder.

The Colonels had a pair of first-half opportunities, the first coming with 12:30 remaining when sophomore goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) knocked down an initial shot by junior back Elena Denger and then an immediate rebound attempt off the foot of freshman midfielder Haley Evans. Sandelli later came out of her goal to try to collect the ball during the last two minutes and got caught off her line, but junior back Diana Perez's (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.) sliding tackle kept sophomore forward Nicolette Towlen from getting the equalizer.

William Paterson once again got on the scoreboard early in a half, this time needing just seconds to strike when freshman midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) played a ball up the right seam and classmate Carla LaRocca (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) finished to the inside of the left post at the 45:21 mark.

Freshman Samantha Cecere made a diving stop of a Jacquelin Nelson (Boonton, N.J./Morris Knolls) shot in the 55th minute, and less than four minutes later Wilkes broke the Pioneers' shutout streak at 308:13 when Towlen found senior forward Caroline Connor on the right side of the box, and she fired across the frame to the inside of the left post for a 2-1 margin at the 58:30 mark.

The Colonels nearly netted the tying goal with 11 minutes to play, but no one could get on the end of Olivia Schlottmann's bouncing ball to the left post.

The Pioneers responded by tacking on an insurance goal with 8:34 left off a corner kick when Perez was able to redirect a ball to the right side of the box and junior midfielder Lauren McHugh (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) ricocheted a shot off the defender and into the net.

Sandelli collected six saves for WP. Young had one first-half stop, and Cecere made two saves during the second period.

The Pioneers will start New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:00 p.m.
