STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The William Paterson softball team (28-10) earned an 8-6, eight-inning victory at Staten Island (22-10) April 28, but dropped the night cap, 5-3.
Game One
Two runs during the top of the eighth inning were the difference during the day's first game.
A walk and two hit by pitches loaded the bases with one out during the bottom of the first for the Dolphins, and a Vanessa Joia two-run single and Chyanne Gilliam run-scoring base hit up the middle handed CSI a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers got one run back in the third thanks to a leadoff walk from freshman third baseman
Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), a sacrifice bunt by junior pitcher
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), a wild pitch and a sac fly from senior left fielder
Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge).
A walk, error and three-run Gilliam homer made it a 6-1 game during the bottom of the third inning.
WP posted three scores in the fourth. Junior designated hitter
Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and sophomore second baseman
Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) walked and junior catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) singled to load the bases for Greulich, who emptied them with a double to left-center field.
The Pioneers tied the game with a pair of sixth-inning scores. A Poretti single, a muffed throw on a fielder's choice and a base hit by junior pitcher
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) loaded the bases with one out. Wimmershoff lifted a sac fly to center, and junior shortstop
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) singled up the middle to make it a 6-6 game.
Kim Fryer was placed on second base to start the eighth, and Greulich walked before Podmajersky sacrificed the runners. A dropped fly ball plated
Kim Fryer, and another dropped throw later in the inning pushed WP ahead by an 8-6 count.
Greulich was 1-for-2 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Wasilak went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Castelli allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks, striking out four in 4.0 innings. Podmajersky (18-4) struck out five while tossing 4.0 hitless innings of relief.
Gilliam finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Jacqueline Cautela (11-5) gave up seven hits, eight runs (four earned) and five walks.
Game Two
Two runs in the bottom of the sixth allowed CSI to salvage a split with a 5-3 win.
Two base hits and a walk led to a run-scoring fielder's choice, handing Staten Island a 1-0 second-inning lead.
An error, base hit and walk loaded the bases for CSI in the fourth, and back-to-back bases on balls issued to Joia and senior third baseman Christina Tufano pushed the Dolphins' advantage to 3-0 in the fourth.
Wasilak hit a two-out double to right center, sophomore center fielder
Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) doubled to left and Pellios doubled to center to make it a 3-2 game during the top of the fifth inning.
