Softball Drops Two on Senior Day

Pioneers Swept by Stockton, 1-0 and 4-0

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (28-12, 9-9 NJAC) suffered a pair of Senior Day losses against Stockton (30-10, 13-5 NJAC), 1-0 and 4-0, during the regular-season finale April 30.

Game One
One unearned run was the difference during the day's first contest.

Stockton sophomore left fielder Chelsea Thomas got on base thanks to an error to open the top of the third inning, stole second and was sacrificed to third by sophomore designated player Danielle Lugo. Senior pitcher Samantha Shockey then doubled to left center to plate the game's only run.

Sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and junior designated hitter Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) accounted for the Pioneers' two hits.

Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) surrendered one unearned run on eight hits and two walks while striking out six (18-5).

Shockey was 3-for-4 with an RBI-double at the plate, and tossed a complete-game two hitter inside the circle, walking one and striking out three (15-6).

Game Two
A three-run sixth inning carried the Ospreys to a 4-0 win.

Stockton came up with one run during the top of the fifth when Lugo singled to right, Shockey doubled off the fence in left and senior designated player Catherine Wunder lifted a sac fly to center.

Senior first baseman Dominique Dorris started the sixth inning with a solo homer to left, making it a 2-0 game. Three straight singles by senior center fielder Nicole Tomo, senior second baseman Gianna Cuffari and Thomas added another score, and a successful double steal made it a 4-0 margin.

Four different players had a hit for WP. Podmajersky (18-6) gave up one run, five hits and three walks over 5.0 innings, striking out four. Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) surrendered four hits and three runs with one strikeout during 2.0 innings of work.

Lugo, Shockey and Dorris each had a pair of hits for the Ospreys. Sophomore Hannah Bibeault improved to 7-1 with a complete-game four-hitter, posting three strikeouts.
