Softball Cruises to Sweep of NJCU

Pioneers Defeat Gothic Knights in Five Innings, 11-0 and 11-1

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (24-6, 8-4 NJAC) cruised to a pair of five-inning victories against New Jersey City (11-19, 0-12 NJAC), 11-0 and 11-1, April 19.

Game One
A six-run first inning got the Pioneers started early. Junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak's (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) leadoff hit by pitch was followed by a bunt single from sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) that was thrown away by the first baseman, allowing Wasilak to score and leaving Lutas on third. Sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) singled through the left side of the infield to plate Lutas, and back-to-back doubles by junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and junior designated hitter Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) made it a 4-0 margin. Freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) tripled in Pellios and senior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff's (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) sac fly pushed across Greulich to make it a 6-0 game.

Freshman catcher Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) doubled down the left-field line to open the home half of the third inning, advanced to third via a groundout and touched home when junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drilled an RBI-single up the middle.

Wasilak had a one-out base hit up the middle in the fourth, Lutas walked and Poretti followed with a run-scoring double down the left-field line. Bainbridge lifted a sac fly to right before Poretti touched home thanks to a wild pitch. Pellios doubled to left field and freshman Marlene Arabia (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) came through with a pinch-hit single to left to score Pellios and finish the scoring at 11-0.

Pellios finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Poretti went 2-for-3 and contributed a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed the first 4.0 innings, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out three (16-2). Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) struck out two of the three batters she faced during the top of the fifth.

Senior Jayla Lee Vega dropped to 6-8, giving up 11 runs, 11 hits and three walks.

Game Two
WP scored the first 11 runs of the game on their way to an 11-1 victory.

Lutas singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the first inning, stole second and advanced to third when the throw bounced into center, and crossed the plate on a Poretti infield base hit.

The Pioneers added six more runs in the third. Castelli led off with a double to center and Wimmershoff reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Wasilak's single up the middle drove in Castelli, a Lutas bunt single loaded the bases, and Lutas delivered a sacrifice fly. Kim Fryer was hit by a pitch to again load the bags, and two runners touched home when Pellios knocked a base hit up the middle. Nicole Fryer followed with a two-run triple to right-center field and WP owned a 7-0 lead.

Wasilak and Lutas hit consecutive doubles to open the fourth, and after a groundout and popup, Pellios and Arabia were issued bases on balls. A wild pitch allowed Lutas to score, and Greulich's two-run single made it an 11-0 game.

Singles by sophomore second baseman Cristina Otero and Vega left runners on the corners with one out during the top of the seventh inning, and an error led to senior center fielder Thalia Garcia's sac fly to right to allow the Gothic Knights to push across one run.

Lutas went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Poretti, Pellios, Nicole Fryer and Greulich each contributed a pair of RBI.

Castelli (8-4) allowed one run on three hits and a walk, striking out five over 5.0 innings.

Freshman Christina Mezey (5-10) gave up 11 runs (10 earned), 10 hits and three walks with three strikeouts for NJCU.

William Paterson will play two games at DeSales Thursday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m.
