Wasilak Has Pair of Home Runs for Pioneers

CENTER VALLEY, PA. – The William Paterson softball team (26-6) posted 6-2 and 15-4 victories at DeSales (5-24) April 21.

Game One
A three-run seventh inning helped the Pioneers put away the Bulldogs, 6-2.

Junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) drew a leadoff walk and promptly touched home on a double down the left-field line by freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) for a 1-0 lead during the top of the second.

Junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) opened the third with a single to right field and two-base error, and two batters later, sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) drove her in with a base hit to left.

A Carly Benjamin single and Alexa Beaumont home run made it a 2-2 game during the bottom of the third.

Nicole Fryer got the lead back in the top of the fourth, starting the frame with a solo homer to left-center field.

Junior pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) led off the seventh with a single through the left side of the infield and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional). A sac bunt by senior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) was followed by a Wasilak home run over the fence in left-center field, and a base hit and stolen base by sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) led to a Poretti RBI-double to right center.

Poretti finished 3-for-4 and added a double and two RBI. Wasilak went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, and Nicole Fryer was 2-for-2 while posting a double, home run and two runs scored.

Podmajersky (17-2) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out 13 during the complete-game effort.

Beaumont was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and run scored. Sophomore Andrea Artesani fell to 3-12, giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits and one walk, striking out two.

Game Two
WP stormed out to an 8-0 lead on its way to a 15-4 victory.

Base hits by Wasilak, Poretti and junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, and a groundout by junior designated hitter Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and a single from Nicole Fryer made it a 2-0 score. A double steal plated Kim Fryer, and Greulich's base hit to right field pushed the margin to 4-0.

The Pioneers added three more in the fourth inning. Wimmershoff hit a one-out double to left center and Wasilak followed with a double to right-center field. A Lutas base hit to center left runners on the corners, and Poretti's bunt single plated Wasilak. Kim Fryer's base hit up the middle made it a 7-0 game.

Wasilak's second home run of the day, this one a solo shot to center, stretched the lead to 8-0 during the top of the sixth.

DeSales crossed the plate four times during the bottom of the sixth. A hit by pitch, base hit and error, and two-run single were followed by a base hit, sacrifice fly, double and error for an 8-4 score.

WP answered with seven runs during its final at-bat. Freshman Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) singled to center and classmate Marlene Arabia (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) walked before a Greulich double resulted in an out at the plate. A groundout and wild pitch scored a run, and Griffith drove in another with a triple to right-center field. Wasilak singled in a run, and a Lutas single and Poretti walk loaded the bases for Kim Fryer, who plated two more with a base hit through the right side. Bainbridge delivered the final two runs with her base hit through the right side of the infield.

Wasilak finished 4-for-5 and posted a double, home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Kim Fryer went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out 11 (9-4). Classmate Allison Speranza (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) gave up four runs and four hits over 0.1 inning of work.
