Softball Drops Pair of Games to Manhattanville

Pioneers Suffer 9-0, 10-4 Losses

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (12-2) dropped 9-0 (five innings) and 10-4 decisions to visiting Manhattanville (16-0) March 29.

Game One
Six runs during the top of the fourth inning helped the Valiants take a 9-0 opening victory.

A dropped fly ball was a three-base error, and freshman second baseman Desiree Buboi drove in the game's first run with a bloop single to center during the top of the first.

Junior Brittany Deieso drew a leadoff walk and freshman shortstop Sophia Chapelone had a one-out single to put runners at the corners in the second frame, and a wild pitch made it a 2-0 Valiant lead.

Manhattanville made it 3-0 during the third thanks to a one-out error and Aarin Hartenstein RBI-double to left center.

The Valiants broke the game open in the fourth. Sophomore right fielder Alexis Ventarola singled to open in the inning, and after a flyout, sophomore left fielder Laurel Cioto had an infield base hit and Buboi was issued a walk to load the bases. Freshman catcher Evonne Torres singled in one run and junior third baseman Alicia Marino plated two more with a single to left before Hartenstein doubled in Torres and Dolores Diemicke's triple pushed across the final two scores.

Five different Pioneers accounted for WP's five hits. Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) suffered her first loss (8-1), allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) struck out the two batters she faced.

Hartenstein was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a pair of RBI and a run scored for Manhattanville. Sophomore Alycia Feeney (9-0) scattered five hits over 5.0 innings, registering one strikeout.

Game Two
The Valiants jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead en route to a 10-4 win.

Doubles by Ventarola, Buboi and Torres were followed by a Marino two-run homer to left for an early 4-0 advantage, and base hits from Chapelone, Ventarola and Torres made it a 5-0 score in the fourth.

WP used a two-out error and double to left center by junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) to push across a run during the home half of the fourth.

Senior first baseman Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y./Commack) opened the fifth with a single, and a two-out base hit by sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and an error made it a 5-3 margin.

Buboi's two-run home run to left extended the Valiants' lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth. Base hits by sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) and freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), a fielder's choice and a Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) hit by pitch loaded the bases during the home half of the same frame, and Geller's sacrifice fly to right field made it a 6-4 contest.

Manhattanville added three more scores in the seventh, using a Diemicke RBI-double and Chapelone two-run single.

Poretti finished 2-for-4 for the Pioneers. Castelli (4-1) surrendered 10 runs and 16 hits during 7.0 innings inside the circle, posting five strikeouts and a walk.

Buboi went 3-for-4 with a double, homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Julianna Orrico (6-0) allowed six hits and four runs (one earned) with a walk and strikeout in 6.0 innings, and Hartenstein tossed 1.0 perfect inning of relief.

William Paterson will visit Drew Thursday, March 31, for a twin bill at 3:00 p.m.
