CLERMONT, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team finished its Spring Break trip 12-0 after shutout wins March 19 at The Spring Games against Union (0-1), 4-0, and Buena Vista (5-5), 5-0. The 12 straight wins mark the best start to a season in Pioneer history.
Game OneJunior
Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) pitched a complete-game 4-0 victory against the Dutchwomen.
Sophomore center fielder
Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) put down a bunt single, stole second and scored when junior shortstop
Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) doubled to left field during the bottom of the first inning.
Junior catcher
Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) started the fifth by reaching first base on an error, was sacrificed to second by freshman
Meagan Trozzo (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and touched home on a Castelli double to right. Two more Union errors brought Castelli in and made it a 3-0 margin.
During the home half of the sixth, freshman third baseman
Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) hit a one-out single and moved to second on an error on the play, and junior
Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) followed with a run-scoring base hit to center.
Seven different Pioneers had a hit. Castelli (4-0) scattered six hits over 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking four.
Freshman Dana Dolinko (0-1) gave up four runs (one earned) on seven hits, striking out two.
Game TwoPellios hit a three-run homer as WP finished the day with a 5-0 triumph.
Greulich opened the top of the fifth with a base hit and was replaced by pinch runner
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), then
Kim Fryer reached via an error before Pellios delivered a pinch-hit home run. Lutas later had a two-out double and Wasilak singled her in for a 4-0 lead.
Junior right fielder
Nicole Fryer's (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) base hit, an error and a fielder's choice left runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh, and another error pushed across the game's final run.
Seven different players had a hit for WP. Junior pitcher
Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) gave up five hits while posting five strikeouts during the complete-game effort (8-0).
Sophomore Moriah Guyett (2-3) surrendered five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts for the Beavers.
William Paterson will play its home opener Tuesday, March 29, facing Manhattanville for a pair of games starting at 3:00 p.m.
