Softball Defeats Kalamazoo, St. Scholastica

Pioneers Improve to 10-0 This Season

CLERMONT, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team extended its school-record, season-opening win streak to 10 games March 18 at The Spring Games, earning a 7-4 victory against Kalamazoo (0-6) and a 6-5 win against St. Scholastica (3-4).

Game One
The Pioneers opened up a 7-1 lead and held on for a 7-4 triumph against the Hornets.

Junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) reached second base on a two-base error, and singles by sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) and freshman designated player Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) allowed her to score for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led off the third with a triple and crossed the plate two batters later thanks to a Wasilak groundout.

WP added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) was hit by a pitch and stole second before junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) singled through the left side. Junior Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) delivered a pinch-hit double to drive in Greulich, and senior first baseman Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y./Commack) singled in Kim Fryer before being replaced by pinch runner Meagan Trozzo (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee). Sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) tripled to right field to push across two more runs for a 6-1 score.

A single, sacrifice and error allowed Kalamazoo to drive in a run during the bottom of the fourth.

Poretti, Bainbridge and Greulich all drew bases on balls to start the fifth, and Kim Fryer's sac fly made it a 7-1 advantage.

The Hornets took advantage of a single and three straight errors to plate two runs with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A single made it a 7-4 game, and another base hit loaded the bases to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but the Pioneers got a popup and two strikeouts to end the game.

Kim Fryer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Lutas was 1-for-4 and added a triple and two RBI.

Junior pitcher Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed the first 6.0 innings, then came back and recorded the final three outs (6-0). She allowed one unearned run and five hits while striking out seven. Junior Allison Speranza (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) was charged with one hit and three unearned runs.

Sophomore third baseman Erika Pueblo was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Kalamazoo. Junior starter Nori Seita (0-1) gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits during 3.1 innings of work, striking out two.

Game Two
The Pioneers fought back from a 5-3 deficit for a 6-5 victory against the Saints.

William Paterson scored three times during the bottom of the first inning. Nicole Fryer and Lutas walked before a Wasilak sacrifice and a Poretti two-run triple to center. Poretti later scored on a two-out error.

St. Scholastica answered with a five-run second. A walk, double and two run-single were followed by a strikeout, and a base on balls and base hit loaded the bases. An RBI-single and two-run double gave the Saints a 5-3 edge.

The Pioneers tied the score in the third, using a Poretti walk, Trozzo fielder's choice, Pellios base on balls and Kim Fryer two-run double to left-center field.

Wasilak opened the home half of the fifth with a double to center and Poretti sacrificed her to third. Bainbridge's pinch-hit sacrifice fly proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Kim Fryer finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Poretti was 1-for-1 with a two-run triple and a run scored.

Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) surrendered five runs, four hits and two walks in 1.1 innings inside the circle, striking out one. Podmajersky (7-0) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out eight over 5.2 innings.

Six different players accounted for the seven CSS hits. Junior Chrisi Mizera (2-2) gave up six runs (five earned), five hits and five walks with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

William Paterson will finish its Spring Break trip Saturday, March 19, against Union at 5:00 p.m. and Buena Vista at 7:00 p.m.
