Pioneers Defeat Keene State, Western New England

CLERMONT, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team (4-0) posted a pair of victories March 14 at The Spring Games, defeating Keene State (3-5), 8-0 in five innings, and Western New England (2-4), 6-0.

Game One
Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tossed a complete-game four-hitter as the Pioneers defeated the Owls in five innings, 8-0.

WP struck for five third-inning runs. Junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) drew a leadoff walk and sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) singled through the right side and stole second. A fielder's choice by freshman designated player Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) plated Wasilak, and Bainbridge was replaced on the base paths by freshman third baseman Meagan Trozzo (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee). Senior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) singled in Poretti and stole second before Podmajersky reached via an error that plated Trozzo. Junior pinch hitter Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) delivered an RBI-single up the middle, and another error allowed Podmajersky to touch home.

The Pioneers finished the game with three runs during the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a pair of two-out errors and a Poretti two-run base hit up the middle.

Poretti was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Podmajersky (3-0) struck out six and walked one.

Four different Keene State batters had a hit. Freshman starter Molly St. Germain took the loss (0-3) after allowing five runs (four earned) and five hits over 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game Two
Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) registered her first win of the season with a complete-game 6-0 shutout against Western New England.

WP opened the scoring with three runs during the top of the second inning. Castelli was issued a two-out walk and was promptly knocked in when Wimmershoff belted her first home run of the season. Senior first baseman Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and junior catcher Kim Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) followed with base hits, and junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) made it a 3-0 game with an RBI-single through the right side.

Wasilak led off the third with a single down the left-field line, and following a Poretti sacrifice, popup, wild pitch and Castelli walk, an error allowed Wasilak to cross the plate for a 4-0 margin.

Kim Fryer opened the top of the fourth with a single through the left side, Nicole Fryer had a base hit through the right side, and sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) put down a sacrifice bunt. Wasilak delivered both runners with a single through the right side of the infield, finishing the scoring.

Nicole Fryer finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Wasilak went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Castelli (1-0) scattered five hits over 7.0 innings, striking out eight Golden Bears.
