Softball Matches Program-Best Start, Posts Pair of Wins

Pioneers Defeat SUNY Geneseo, Keene State

CLERMONT, FLA. – The William Paterson softball team improved to 6-0 this season with two wins March 15 at The Spring Games, defeating SUNY Geneseo (3-2), 2-0, and Keene State (3-6), 6-2.

The Pioneers' six-game win streak matches the program's best start to a season, as the 2009 team went 6-0 en route to a 35-9 overall record and NCAA Tournament Regional final appearance.

Game One
Junior Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) pitched a complete-game two-hitter as WP started the day with a 2-0 victory.

The Pioneers broke the ice during the bottom of the second inning when sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J./Florence Memorial) led off with a triple to right center and later scored on a two-out error.

WP added one more in the fourth, using a leadoff walk from junior shortstop Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), a Poretti sacrifice, a Salina Pellios (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) groundout and an RBI-double by senior left fielder Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge).

Poretti, Wimmershoff, sophomore center fielder Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) and freshman third baseman Meagan Trozzo (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) accounted for William Paterson's four hits.

Podmajersky (4-0) struck out 10 batters while surrendering just two singles.

Sophomore Olivia Furness suffered the loss (0-2), giving up two runs (one earned) and three hits over 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two
Four different Pioneers had multi-hit efforts as WP finished the day with a 6-2 win.

Freshman third baseman Karley Jo Greulich (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) started the top of the third inning with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by senior first baseman Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y./Commack). Two batters later, junior right fielder Nicole Fryer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) singled in Greulich, and Fryer later crossed the plate thanks to a Wasilak fielder's choice, handing the Pioneers a 2-0 edge.

A Poretti triple down the left-field line led to a sacrifice fly by freshman designated player Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) for a 3-0 margin in the sixth.

The Owls fought back, using two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a walk to load the bases with one out. An error allowed two runners to touch home, but Podmajersky entered and ended the threat with a strikeout and groundout.

The Pioneers plated three insurance runs in the seventh, using a Greulich double, Trozzo pinch-hit RBI-single, Fryer triple, Lutas run-scoring base hit and an error on a throw from the plate to third base.

Greulich finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Fryer was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Poretti had a triple and run scored as part of a 2-for-4 effort, and Lutas went 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored one herself.

Junior Gabrielle Castelli (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) improved to 2-0, allowing two runs (one earned), four hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. Podmajersky struck out three of the six batters she faced for her first save of the season.

Senior Morgan Fallon led Keene State at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Classmate Mariah Crisp gave up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits and one walk, notching six strikeouts (3-2).

William Paterson will face Frostburg State at 1:00 p.m. and Ripon at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.
